Sudden dental pain or an injury can be stressful, and the safest next step is not always obvious. Call Summit Dental Arts as soon as possible and describe what happened, when symptoms began, whether swelling is present and whether the tooth or restoration is broken or loose. This information helps the team provide instructions and determine how urgently you should be evaluated.
An emergency visit is focused on diagnosing the source, controlling immediate symptoms and preventing avoidable complications. Definitive treatment may be completed at that visit when appropriate, or the area may first need stabilization followed by a scheduled procedure.
For a knocked-out permanent tooth, handle it by the crown rather than the root. If it is dirty, gently rinse it without scrubbing. If possible, place it back in the socket; otherwise keep it moist in an appropriate medium and seek dental care immediately. Primary teeth should not be replanted.
If a tooth breaks, save any pieces and rinse the mouth gently. A cold compress on the outside of the face may help with swelling after an injury. Do not place aspirin directly against the tooth or gums, and do not use glue to replace a crown or repair a tooth.
Call 911 or seek emergency medical care for difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, severe facial trauma, confusion, loss of consciousness or rapidly increasing swelling that threatens the airway. A dental office is not a substitute for emergency medical services in these situations.
